چکیده
Naturalistic theories of language acquisition assume learners to be endowed with some innate language knowledge. The purpose of this innate knowledge is to facilitate language acquisition by constraining a learner’s hypothesis space. This paper discusses a naturalistic learning system (a Categorial Grammar Learner (CGL)) that differs from previous learners (such as the Triggering Learning Algorithm (TLA) (Gibson and Wexler, 1994)) by employing a dynamic definition of the hypothesis-space which is driven by the Bayesian Incremental Parameter Setting algorithm (Briscoe, 1999). We compare the efficiency of the TLA with the CGL when acquiring an independently and identically distributed English-like language in noiseless conditions. We show that when convergence to the target grammar occurs (which is not guaranteed), the expected number of steps to convergence for the TLA is shorter than that for the CGL initialized with uniform priors. However, the CGL converges more reliably than the TLA. We discuss the trade-off of efficiency against more reliable convergence to the target grammar.

The Source of Human Knowledge: Plato’s problem and Orwell’s problem
Chomsky cannot help wondering at the fact that we, despite so vast evidence, have little knowledge about the obvious evidence. A good example, I think, is the child’s way of first language acquisition. A great many researchers have studied various aspects of child language acquisition at different stages of the child’ life and have brought to light many details of language development. However,...

متن کاملComputational Modeling of Human Language Acquisition
The nature and amount of information needed for learning a natural language, and the underlying mechanisms involved in this process, are the subject of much debate: is it possible to learn a language from usage data only, or some sort of innate knowledge and/or bias is needed to boost the process? This is a topic of interest to (psycho)linguists who study human language acquisition, as well as ...
متن کاملThe Effect of Young Mothers’ Social Classes on First Language Acquisition
The purpose of this study is to investigate the significant relationship between different young mothers’ social classes and children’s language learning. According to this research goal, this study is eager to answer the two major research questions: (a) Is there any significant difference between middle-class and working-class mothers’ speech? (b) Is there any significant relationship between...
